Inspired by one of the greatest works of ancient wisdom literature — one that seems just as relevant today as when it was written thousands of years ago: Ecclesiastes.

In it, the author contemplates the meaning and purpose of life: what adds value and what does not. He examines human pursuits such as knowledge, work, riches, sex and power. Ultimately, and perhaps unsurprisingly, each endeavour is futile. This piece considers our pursuit of worldly gains and the fulfilment they do, or do not offer. What can fill the aching and hunger in our hearts?

“I saw there was more gain in wisdom than there is in folly, as there is more gain in light than there is in darkness.” — Ecclesiastes 2:13

“Then I said in my heart, ‘What happens to the fool will happen to me also… the wise dies just like the fool.’ All are from the dust and to the dust all return.” — Ecclesiastes 2:15–16, 3:20
